Beta Analytic's Haley Gershon
  • What is biobased content & why measure it

Ms. Gershon will discuss the terminologies used in the biobased industry and why testing is necessary, not only as part of certification programs but as a marketing tool to make your products stand out from competition.
Overview: Understanding Biobased Carbon Measurement

  • How is a material’s biobased content measured using ASTM D6866

ASTM D6866 is an analytical standard developed in 2014 specifically for the USDA BioPreferred Program. This standard measures the percentage of biobased carbon as a fraction of the total organic carbon in the material. Using an accelerator mass spectrometer, ASTM D6866 distinguishes carbon resulting from contemporary biomass-based inputs from carbon sourced from petrochemicals.

Robert Handfield, PhD
  • Certifying products under the USDA BioPreferred Program

Dr. Handfield is an industry expert on strategic sourcing, supply market intelligence, and supplier development. He will talk about the USDA BioPreferred Program, which provides federal agencies with tools and training to help them meet their biobased purchasing requirements, as well as aid the general public to easily identify commercially-available biobased products.

How to get your products certified?

An applicant must first submit all the necessary information through the BioPreferred website before biobased content testing any product. Note: Results obtained in advance of the signed agreement and acceptance into the program will not be accepted by the USDA.

Successful applicants can affix the USDA Certified Biobased Label on the product, packaging or marketing materials.
