Tracing Sources of Anthropogenic Pollution Webinar

Live Webinar: February 23, 2022 * Available on Demand *
Speaker: Maren Pauly, PhD

Topics include:

  • Nutrient contamination in natural environments
    – Point source vs non-point source pollution
    – Importance of source tracking for managing the nutrient input
    – Isotopes as tracers
  • Nutrient source tracking using isotopes – Traditional use of nitrogen (δ15N) & oxygen (δ18O)
  • Boron in the environment: anthropogenic causes and negative implications
    – Isolating the source by combining three isotopes – δ11B, δ15N, δ18O

Dr. Pauly will also discuss example reports and the sample preparation and submission processes for both Beta Analytic and its subsidiary Isobar Science.

About the Speaker

Dr. Maren Pauly has research experience on reconstructing climate from modern corals and subfossil tree-rings as well as Late Glacial radiocarbon calibration. She is a paleoclimatologist currently affiliated with Beta Analytic and Isobar Science as a Scientific Associate. She received her PhD degree from Freie Universität Berlin and her Master of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees at the University of Waterloo in Canada.

Beta Analytic & Isobar Science

ISO 17025-accredited Beta Analytic provides nutrient source tracking and Isobar Science offers boron isotopic analysis. Both laboratories fully support research focused on pollution source monitoring.

In December 2021, Isobar Science’s Vice President of Lab Operations Dr. Arash Sharifi presented the research “Nutrient Source Tracking of Surface-water Using a Multi-isotope Approach: A Case Study in South Florida” at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting held in New Orleans, Louisiana.

In this work, Dr. Sharifi and his co-authors analyzed an array of isotopes (δ15NNO3, δ18ONO3, δ18OPO4, δ2Hwater, δ18Owater, δ11Bwater, 87Sr/86Sr, and D14CDOC) to characterize South Florida’s surface waters and track the nutrient pollution sources.
