The CertiPUR-US® foam certification program is launching an initiative to certify biobased slabstock flexible polyurethane foams in September 2023. Biobased content will be measured by ISO 17025:2017-accredited Beta Analytic following the ASTM D6866 Method B standard using an Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (AMS) instrument.
A minimum of 25% biobased content must be met to achieve biobased foam certification through this program. All certified biobased foams must be recertified six months after the initial certification and annually after that.
To qualify for certification, producers must follow CertiPUR’s technical guidelines.1 Foam producers that achieve this biobased certification will have permission to use an exclusive CertiPUR-US® logo.
In addition to biobased testing, certified biobased slabstock foams must also meet additional physical property testing requirements. These include foam tensile, tear, elongation, ball rebound and air flow testing. Physical property testing results must be recorded using the Physical Property Testing Report form.2
CertiPUR-US® certified slabstock foams contain certified flexible polyurethane foam. The certified foams have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions; are made without ozone depleters or heavy metals, formaldehyde, or phthalates; and they are made without polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) or Tris flame retardants Tris (2-chloroethyl)-phosphate (TCEP), Tris (2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate (TDBPP), Tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP) or Tris-(aziridinyl)-phosphinoxide (TEPA).
